Tortuguero is teaming with wildlife including crocodiles, caimans, monkeys, sloths, poison dart frogs, turtles, bats, and much more. And with jungle, open range, swampland, fresh water and ocean habitats converging in one place, Tortuguero is especially rich and diverse in its bird species.

Moreover, for centuries, green turtles, leatherbacks, and other marine turtles have visited the shores here to lay their eggs. For much of the year you can experience this magical renewal of life first-hand. Tortuguero is cut off from the world by water and lush jungle, no roads in or out, so just getting there is an adventure in itself.

You do not have to start and end this trip in the same city. You can do this trip from the South Caribbean (Limon, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, etc.) or from San Jose and end the trip in either location, your choice. That way, if you intend to go from one point to another anyway, you can avoid a wasted travel day. If you want to start and end in the same place, that's no problem.

Explore trails on the property; discover the wildlife: howler monkeys, caiman, sloth, hundreds of exotic birds and other species.

Swim in the turtle-shaped pool. Lounge in a palm-shaded hammock. Listen to the surf -- a half mile of private Caribbean beachfront. Try fresh fruits and exotic delicacies in the open-air restaurant. Take a canal tour in an dugout canoe.
